Cybervisit
Encourage your students to explore the
world of work by visiting a virtual workplace
to find out about dozens of different jobs.
This is a lively team game which students from Y7 to Y10 can enjoy. Players can increase their understanding of the skills and training needed for various jobs. They also find out about jobs which they may not have heard of before.
As students discuss their ideas and make decisions within their teams, they use key skills such as communication and working with others.
Cybervisit can be used by a whole class, either on an interactive whiteboard or simply by using a projector and screen. Each visit could last from 10 minutes to a whole lesson, or until a team have scored an agreed number of points.
How does it work?
Students divide into teams and play against each other. They choose an area within the workplace and try to find out what jobs are done by the people working there. With each turn they can reveal two facts about a person’s job, and try to guess what they do.
If correct, they score points for their team, if wrong they lose points. As more facts are revealed students build up a knowledge of what each job involves. Students can also guess an area of the workplace based on who is working there, but beware, some staff move around in the course of doing their job!
Games for different abilities
Cybervisit comes with a number of different workplaces, which differ in complexity.
Airport. The most complex workplace, consisting of 12 different areas containing 20 different jobs.
Secondary school. Probably the simplest of the workplaces, as many of the jobs should be familiar to your students. Can be a useful introduction to secondary school for Y7 pupils, or use with Y6 prior to leaving for secondary school.
Farm. People tend to move around a lot on the farm - it’s interesting to see where they turn up next. The farm is also visited by people such as vets and surveyors.
Publishing company. An introduction to a commercial company, featuring marketing and computer-related jobs.
