First Jed at Key Stage 2

First Jed is also being used sucessfully in a primary school setting.

In a recent project Ann Starkie of AS Careers used First Jed as part of a project introducing career-related learning to Year 6 students. The aim of the project was to help students learn about career opportunities and life options. Ann used First Jed to help students understand the broad range of career options open to them, and to help in their exploration of the world of work.

Ann spoke about the project on Radio 4 in October, and has written an article in Careers Guidance Today, the magazine of the Institute of Career Guidance.

Ann's produced a video of the world of work project, which is available on her website. The part which introduces JED can be found at 3:12

Ideas for using JED in your primary project:

  • Use the tutor settings to alter JED so that it goes straight into First Jed. You may also wish to turn off the links to external websites.
  • Use the localising feature to add photos of your class visits to industry, and of any visiting speakers.
  • Use JED to explore all the jobs in a particular setting, such as an airport, a hospital, or a football ground.
  • The quiz and the top tens can encourage students to investigate jobs they may never have heard of before.
  • Watching the videos gives students a good idea of the sorts of tasks and skills required for a job, and an insight into real workplaces.
  • Readers of all abilities enjoy reading along with the animated text-to-speech character.
  • Let the students know where they can access JED independently. Then when they hear of a job they don't recognise, they know where they can find easily accessible information.
