Using Careersoft products at home

Using Careersoft's products from home is a great idea. It gets parents and carers involved in the conversation about young people and their choices in education, training, and careers. And it means young people can use time at home to find out about the world of work and consider their choices, rather than being limited to school time only.

There are three different ways for tutors and IT staff to enable students to be able to use Careersoft products from home. These are listed below. Whichever way you choose, please remember that the licensing restrictions are the same: the product is for use by staff, clients, and students of the establishment named on the licence only. Please ensure that other people can't use the product on your licence.

Using the products from home with Access Codes (Site licence holders)

Access Codes were introduced in 2014 as an easy way of enabling your students to access Careersoft products from home. You have an eight-character code for your establishment. You let your students know that code, and then with it they can easily access Careersoft products from home.

Your Access Code is unique to your establishment; ensure that it isn't put on any publicly-visible web pages or disclosed in any way that means people other than staff, clients, and students of your establishment get to know it.

See the page about using the products from the internet for more about Access Codes and how to use them.

Using the products from home using your licensed web link (Site licence holders)

Your licensed web link is a hyperlink that goes in a private web page, and contains licensing information unique to your establishment. Using the product is then just a matter of clicking on that link, and your licensed users go straight through to the product, licensed for them. You have to make sure that the link is on your private web pages only, and not accessible by anyone other than people entitled to use the product on your licence.

If your licensed web link is on a VLE (virtual learning environment) or similar, where the content is password-protected and visible to staff and students of your establishment only, then you can use your licensed web link to enable licensed users to access the product from home too. The authorised users from your establishment log on to your VLE from home, and then on your private pages they click on the licensed web link to go straight through to the product, licensed for them.

As set out in the terms of your licence it is not permitted to put your licensed web link on any pages that can be seen by people other than staff and students of your establishment as named on the licence.

See the page about using the products from the internet for more about licensed web links and how to use them.

Using products from home by using one-code-per-student top-up codes (Site licence or Personal licence holders)

With this way of using Jed or Higher Ideas, each student/client has their own use-at-home code which enables them to use the product at home for up to 90 days. Most establishments find the newer one-code-per-establishment Access Codes system easier (see details above). The top-up codes system is still available though, as a way of using Jed or Higher Ideas if you want to.

To make use of top-up codes, your product needs to be configured to show the 'Use at home' icon on the product's home page. This icon is set on/off from within the tutor settings pages of your product. From within the product, click on the 'tutor' link from the home page and then enter the tutor password, to access the tutor settings page. From within the tutor settings, tick the 'show use-at-home link' tick box to display the use-at-home icon and link on the main menu page.

Now that the use-at-home settings box is ticked to show the link, users will now see a 'use at home' house icon on the product's home page. Clicking on that link reveals a 13-character top-up code, with which the user can create their own personal login to use at home. The top-up code is different for each user, and gives each user 90 days' use of the product. To extend that time, all they need to do is to pick up another top-up code from the the product next time they are in school.

Note that while Access Codes (see first section on this page) are one code per establishment, top-up codes are one code per student. Each student needs to collect and use their own top-up code; you cannot just hand out one code for all your school like you can with Access Codes.
