Health and safety
Lesson
To enable students to become more aware of health and safety issues in the workplace.
Context
Many people in work wear special clothing and students may not realise that this is for health and safety requirements. The photographs in JED can be used to illustrate what people wear at work.
Learning outcomes
Students can list items of safety wear and some jobs where they might be used.
Level
Average and below average ability students.
Resources
Access to the pictures in JED.
Contribution to National Framework
This activity contributes to the following learning outcomes, KS4 learning outcome 10.
Starter
Ask the class to describe what they would expect to see a builder wearing. Which of the items could be considered to be items of health and safety wear?
Main
Use JED to find two different job titles where there are pictures of people wearing:-
- Goggles
- Hard hats
- Overalls
- Safety boots
- Gloves
- Helmet
In each case why is that safety equipment needed?
Plenary
As well as safety wear, many workers wear special clothing or items in their job. Describe some that the class has seen recently, e.g. fast food crew worker in a uniform, PE teacher in sports wear.
Extension Activity
The activity could be extended by asking students to find jobs where two of the above features are combined in one job e.g. find two jobs where people wear a hard hat and safety boots.
