Odd one out
Lesson
To enable students to understand more about the world of work.
Context
Many jobs have something in common with each other. This could be something as straight forward as working outside or something more difficult such as requiring a particular qualification.
Learning outcomes
Students will recognise that there are common elements between jobs. This could be on the basis of a common skill, ability, linked school subject, interest, qualification, task etc.
Level
This activity is suitable for students of all abilities, the complexity of the activity being determined by the ability/age of the students.
Resources
Access to JED and the activity sheet below.
The associated document/worksheet for this activity can be downloaded as a pdf file.
Contribution to National Framework
This activity contributes to the following learning outcomes, KS3, KS4 and Post-16 learning outcome 8.
Starter
Question and answer session on what is common between jobs, e.g. baker and bricklayer (mixing relative amounts of ingredients (dough and mortar)); pilot and bus driver (carrying passengers); actor and teacher (keeping the attention of the audience/class).
There are many jobs that have a lot in common with each other even though they may appear very different.
Main
Study the set of eight pictures from eight different JED job records each of which has a caption but no actual job title. Seven of the pictures have something in common. Which picture is the odd one out? Explain your reasoning.
Plenary
Students compete to come up with the strangest pairing of jobs that have something in common.
Extension Activity
Create a wall display of jobs that are linked by a factor such as a skill, or a personal quality.
