Lesson
To enable students to identify Key Skills being used in employment.
Context
Many students need help in recognising that Key Skills are useful in employment.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to describe the Key Skills and how they are used in a wide range of different occupations.
Level
This activity can be appropriate for any group of students, the complexity of the activity being determined by their age/ability.

Contribution to National Framework
This activity contributes to the following learning outcomes, KS3 learning outcomes 2 and 7.
Starter
Divide the class into four groups. One group should draw up a list of jobs where an ability to communicate is important. The others focus on Numeracy, IT and Working with Others. Groups should try to make sure that their list covers a wide range of jobs at different levels.
Main
Use the grid with job titles across the top and skills down the side to help you identify the skills that the workers have. Put a tick in the box to show which skills a worker has and explain why. You can look up the job title in JED and use the information to help you.

Class discussion on the activities in school that are helping to develop the skills needed in work?
Extension Activity
Draw up a list of interview questions that would help an employer find out if somebody had a well developed range of Key Skills.
