Getting to know Jed - part 1 - The Job Record
Lesson
Getting to know Jed part 1 (of six). To introduce students to the job records in Jed.
Context
On first using Jed, students need to understand what the various sections of the job records represent. This activity takes them through a series of screens, asking them to identify what the sections are and collect some of the information on the screen.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to describe some of the job record sections in Jed.
Level
Average and below average ability students
Resources
Access to Jed and the student instruction/answer sheet below.
The associated document/worksheet for this activity can be downloaded as a PDF file.
Contribution to National Framework
This activity contributes to the following learning outcomes, KS3, KS4 and Post-16 learning outcomes 8 and 10.
Starter
Ask the class to name examples of where they have seen information about different jobs. Tell them that they will now be introduced to Jed, the Job Explorer Database.
Main
The activity sheet asks the students to visit a job record and note down information from some of the different sections.
Plenary
Ask the students to describe other sources of information about jobs and why they might use them, e.g. they might know somebody who does that job and is willing to tell them about it. Why might Jed be more accurate than other sources of information?
Extension Activity
To extend the work, a grid could be devised and students asked to collect information from several different job titles to complete the squares in the grid. The job titles included could be from the same occupational sector, a similar environment or have something in common such as using a computer.
