Getting to know Jed part 2 (of six). To introduce students to the job groups in Jed.
Context
On first using Jed, students need to understand what the various sections of the program represent. This activity takes them through a series of questions about the job groups in Jed.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to describe some of the job groups in Jed.
Level
Average and below average ability students.

Contribution to National Framework
This activity contributes to the following learning outcomes, KS3, KS4 and Post-16 learning outcomes 8 and 10.Starter
Ask the class to name examples of how jobs can be grouped together, e.g. indoor/outdoor jobs, jobs in uniform. Tell them that they will now be introduced to the job groups in Jed.
Main
The activity sheet asks the students to visit two different job groups and note the number of sub-groups and how the number of jobs in the group is partly determined by the exam level that is set.
Plenary
Ask the students to discuss the idea that the more qualifications you have the more jobs there might be to choose from. Note this is often determined by which job group you select.
Extension Activity
To extend the work, a grid could be devised for students to collect pay information for jobs at different levels. If you restrict the students to one job group it can often be shown that the more qualifications you have the more money you will earn – although this is not always the case!
