Current version

Make sure you have the current version of the DVD. The current version of Higher Ideas is the 2017-18 edition - version 2.11.0

Internet use

Higher Ideas is available to install, or to use from the internet. The internet version looks and works just like the installed version.

For internet access to Higher Ideas, see www.careersoft.co.uk/internet.

The internet version always has the latest most up-to-date Higher Ideas. Updates to licensing and content are taken care of by Careersoft. So long as your subscription to Higher Ideas is up to date, Higher Ideas internet will continue to run and show the latest version.

Licensing Higher Ideas when installed from the DVD

To use Higher Ideas installed to your computer or network, you will need the DVD authorisation code and other details that came with the authorisation code letter you received when you purchased Higher Ideas. This letter also shows if you have a use at home licence.

Higher Ideas initially runs in demonstration mode, without requiring any authorisation code. In demonstration mode, some features of the product are restricted. To unlock the full functionality of the product, you need to enter your authorisation code.

To licence Higher Ideas, run the Higher Ideas program and enter your establishment name and DVD authorisation code when prompted. These details need to be entered exactly as shown on your authorisation code letter. If your Higher Ideas is already licensed, you can view or update your licence by running Higher Ideas and clicking on the 'Licensed for use by...' link in the centre of the main menu page. If you have installed Higher Ideas as per the instructions for installing Higher Ideas on your network (below), you only need to enter the establishment name and authorisation code at one terminal, and this will enable it for all computers in your network.

Administrator rights needed for installing or updating

To install or update Higher Ideas you need to to know the details of an account that has Administrator rights. You can be logged on as any user, but if you are not logged in as an Administrator then during the install you will be prompted to enter the details of an account that does have Administrator rights.

Once the program is installed, you do not need any special rights to run it.

Updating an existing installation

If you already have Higher Ideas installed on a computer, you can easily update your installation using the Higher Ideas installation DVD.

To update Higher Ideas, put the Higher Ideas installation DVD into the DVD drive of the computer on which Higher Ideas is installed, and then double-click the setup file to run it. The setup file can be found in the root folder of the DVD.

When you run setup, it will update Higher Ideas and keep your existing licensing details. It will also keep any settings that you have entered previously while using Higher Ideas.

If during the setup the installer detects that you have other Careersoft products installed that need to be updated in order to be compatible with this version of Higher Ideas, it will offer to update them. We recommend that you say yes to this.

Installing on just this computer

To install Higher Ideas on just this computer, put the Higher Ideas installation DVD into the DVD drive of the computer that you want to install Higher Ideas to, and then double-click the setup file to run it. The setup file can be found in the root folder of your DVD.

During the install sequence, choose the use it on this computer only option on the Install Options page during the install. Choose the default choices for the rest of the install.

During the install procedure you will have a choice of where to install the program to. Usually it is best to accept the recommended location. If you change it to somewhere else, please make sure that you install it to a local drive. Typically this will be drive letters like C: or D:. Installing it to a network drive or UNC path (typically like P: or \\MYCOMPUTERNAME will not work).

If during the setup the installer detects that you have other Careersoft products installed that need to be updated in order to be compatible with this version of Higher Ideas, it will offer to update them. We recommend that you say yes to this.

Installing on your network

We intend that you should find Higher Ideas easy to install on your network. It pays to read through these notes first to save time and hassle later.

Please note that this is the recommended way of installing for all compatible network types, including all types of Windows networks, Citrix, RM Community Connect etc (see the additional help web pages for specific installation notes for various network types, including RM).

The network install for Higher Ideas is different to the network install for many other products.

  • Nothing needs installing to the client machines
  • You do not need to visit any of the client machines
  • The program files are not installed to mapped drives or UNC shares

Deployment principle

Higher Ideas contains a lightweight engine that makes interactive HTML pages on-the-fly and makes them available over http. For a stand-alone installation, the html page-maker and the browser are on the same machine. For a straightforward network install, the page-maker and browsers can be on separate computers, so the page-maker runs as a service on your 'server' (can be any current Windows OS, including Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2012 Server, Windows 2016 Server, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10), and then your clients point their browser (typically Microsoft Internet Explorer) at the server to view the pages. The connection is effected using standard HTTP over your TCP network, like your clients do for viewing external websites.

The engine does pages for Higher Ideas, and some other Careersoft products if installed. It will not do pages for anything else, and does not require or interact with any web server on the server. You may have used other 'browser-ware' products based on this principle already, ranging from web interfaces for network printers, to sophisticated information management packages.

You can install the product to each client machine individually instead if you wish, but this will require visiting each machine to install the product, and visiting them again every time you want to update the product or licence code. So installing Higher Ideas by visiting each computer is not recommended.

It is not possible to run the program by sharing the exe off a mapped drive or UNC share.

The installer installs the Higher Ideas program. If you computer does not have a suitable version of the Microsoft .NET Framework installed already (all Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2012 Server, and Windows 2016 Server computers do, as do most other computers), then the installer will also install a suitable version of Microsoft .NET, after asking you first.

Installation

  1. Choose a suitable computer to install to. This should be connected to your network and running at all times that users might want to connect to it. A server is often a good choice for this. The operating system for the server part can be any current Windows operating system, including Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2012 Server, Windows 2016 Server, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. Clients can be any operating system that supports a suitable browser, including Windows 7, 8, 10 etc. By default, the network connectivity components in Higher Ideas will only work on networks with standard private IP ranges according to RFC1597, i.e. 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x to 172.31.x.x, and 192.168.x.x. Higher Ideas will also work on the 'link-local' 169.254.x.x range used by DHCP-less local networks where clients auto-allocate their own IP addresses. If your network runs on some non-standard IP range (i.e. none of the above), contact support@careersoft.co.uk for advice.
  2. Run the installer by double-clicking the setup file (there is also a Windows installer msi file on the DVD, but using this directly could mean that you miss out on some important updates to your system files, so is not recommended). Note also that the setup file must run on the target computer – you cannot run the setup.exe file on one computer to install to another. The installer must run as a Privileged user (Administrative rights), either by you being logged on as an Administrator, or by entering Administrator credentials when prompted. Once installed, users need no special rights to use the product.
  3. Choose the "Allow others to connect to it" option from the Install Options page during the installation.
  4. Choose to install to a local drive. The destination folder for the installation must be a local drive on the machine that you are installing on. Mapped shares, on this computer or on other computers, and any UNC paths (like \\computername ), will not work. The installation folder does not need to be shared – in fact, it is best if it is not shared. Remember – Higher Ideas makes its information visible as HTML pages over HTTP, not as files off a file share.
  5. Note the URL for connecting to Higher Ideas. A box containing this information pops up during the network install (this information is also visible from the Careersoft Network Components item in your Control Panel). You should note these details for use by your client computers for connecting to Higher Ideas. The box showing these links also allows you to try these out in your browser, and this can also be a good opportunity to register the program by entering the Establishment Name and DVD Authorisation Code supplied in your authorisation code letter – the program asks for these when you try to use it.
  6. Provide a way for your client computers to find Higher Ideas. This could be by putting a Favorites link in their browser (perhaps by using Group Policy in Active Directory), or by putting a URL shortcut on their Desktop or Start menu (like you might do with a shortcut to an exe file), or by putting a hyperlink on your intranet. See the page about publishing your links on Careersoft's website for details.

Other updates during the installation

The installer installs the Higher Ideas program. If you computer does not have a suitable version of the Microsoft .NET Framework installed already (all Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2012 Server, and Windows 2016 Server computers do, as do most other computers), then the installer will also install a suitable version of Microsoft .NET, after asking you first.

If during the setup the installer detects that you have other Careersoft products installed that need to be updated in order to be compatible with this version of Higher Ideas, it will offer to update them. We recommend that you say yes to this.

Browser requirements

Higher Ideas will work with most recent browsers, including Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Edge. If using Microsoft Internet Explorer, we recommend using IE9 or higher.

What's on the DVD?

The root of the DVD contains the main installer program, setup.exe

The folder called \supporting application installers\DotNet on the DVD contains installation files for the Microsoft .NET Framework. Normally you do not need to bother with these items separately, because by running setup.exe your system is updated with these components automatically as part of the install process (you get prompted first).

Where to find further information

Please visit the Higher Ideas support page on Careersoft's website for information about using Higher Ideas with specific network types, including Windows Active Directory, RM CC3, Citrix and Novell, and notes about troubleshooting your Higher Ideas application.
